REGULATIONS-PREPAREDNESS

Regulations, Packing List & Safety

Crucial environmental rules, mandatory regulations, and a comprehensive packing checklist to ensure safety and compliance.

Regulations, Packing List & Safety

Strict Environmental Regulations

Parque Tayrona is a highly protected ecological reserve. Violators of these rules face heavy fines and eviction by police:

  • No Single-Use Plastics: Single-use plastic bottles, bags, straws, and polystyrene containers are strictly banned. Security checks bags at the entrance gates. Bring reusable bottles.
  • No Alcohol or Substances: Bringing alcohol, beer, or drugs into the park is illegal. Visitors can purchase beer in moderate quantities inside the park at authorized restaurants.
  • No Pets: Domestic animals are banned to protect native species from disease (such as canine distemper) and predation.
  • No Noise Pollution: Speakers, musical instruments, and shouting are prohibited to prevent disturbing nesting birds and monkeys.
  • No Collecting Natural Items: Taking shells, stones, sand, corals, flowers, or capturing insects/animals is a federal crime.

Safety Guidelines and Swimming Flags

Ocean conditions can change quickly. Always look at the beach warning flags:

  • 🔴 Red Flag: Dangerous rip currents. Swimming is strictly prohibited.
  • 🟡 Yellow Flag: Caution. Swimming is allowed but expect waves; stay close to shore.
  • 🟢 Green Flag: Safe. Calm conditions.

Essential Packing Checklist

Since you must hike to carry everything you bring, pack light but bring these essentials:

  1. Cash (COP): Credit card readers are rare and depend on weak satellite signals. Bring plenty of Colombian Pesos for food, water, lodging, and transport.
  2. Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners are required for the forest. Flip-flops are only suitable on the beaches.
  3. Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle. While bottled water is sold in the park, it is expensive and creates waste.
  4. Sun and Bug Protection: Biodegradable sunscreen (to protect coral reefs) and high-strength insect repellent (dengue is present in the region).
  5. Lightweight Clothing: Quick-dry shirts, shorts, swimwear, and a light rain jacket if traveling during transitional months.
  6. Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is recommended, and travelers should carry their vaccination booklet, though it is rarely checked at the gate.
